BEST3는 BEST1, BEST2, BEST4를 포함하는 베스트로핀(anion channel) 패밀리에 속합니다. BEST1 유전자는 vitelliform macular dystrophy(VMD)와 관련된 돌연변이로 알려져 있습니다. 베스트로핀 단백질은 고도의 방향족 잔기 및 불변 arg-phe-pro (RFP) 모티프를 포함하는 상동 영역을 가지며, 8개의 RFP-TM 도메인 인코딩 엑손이 거의 동일한 크기와 엑손-인트론 경계를 공유합니다. 각 베스트로핀 유전자는 고유한 3'-말단 영역을 갖습니다.
