Heme oxygenase (HO) is a microsomal enzyme that catalyzes the oxidation of heme to biliverdin and carbon monoxide.
HO exists as two isozymes: inducible HO-1 and constitutive HO-2.
HO-1 expression is induced by oxidative stress, inflammatory agents, TGF-β, and heat shock.
Increased HO-1 expression is considered a cellular defense mechanism against oxidative stress, as elevated HO can generate bilirubin, an antioxidant molecule.
