This antibody reacts with an extracellular epitope of CD11a (alpha-subunit of murine LFA-1), a 180 kDa type I transmembrane glycoprotein expressed on B and T lymphocytes, monocytes, macrophages, neutrophils, basophils, and eosinophils.

Target Information

CD11a (LFA-1 alpha, ITGAL), together with CD18, constitutes leukocyte function-associated antigen 1 (LFA-1), the αLβ2 integrin. CD11a is crucial for leukocyte intercellular adhesion via ICAM-1, -2, and -3 interactions and plays a role in lymphocyte costimulatory signaling. It is expressed on leukocyte plasma membranes in a low-affinity conformation; upon stimulation, it shifts to a high-affinity state enabling tight ligand binding. CD11a is involved in immune cell interactions, tissue-specific settlement, and regulation of differentiation, proliferation, and T-cell effector functions. Blocking CD11a has therapeutic relevance in inflammatory diseases. Humanized anti-CD11a antibody Efalizumab (Raptiva) and simvastatin binding to CD11a are examples of CD11a-targeted modulation.
