Target Information
Excitatory amino acid transporter 2 (EAAT2) is a membrane-bound solute transporter protein responsible for clearing the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate from the extracellular space at synapses in the central nervous system. Proper glutamate clearance is essential for synaptic activation and prevention of neuronal damage due to excessive receptor activation. Mutations or decreased expression of EAAT2 are associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified.
