Target Information
Oncostatin M (OSM) is a growth and differentiation factor involved in neurogenesis, osteogenesis, and hematopoiesis. Produced by activated T cells, monocytes, and Kaposi’s sarcoma cells, OSM can have both stimulatory and inhibitory effects on cell proliferation. It promotes proliferation of fibroblasts, smooth muscle cells, and Kaposi’s sarcoma cells, while inhibiting some normal and tumor cell lines. OSM also induces cytokine release (e.g., IL-6, GM-CSF, G-CSF) from endothelial cells and enhances LDL receptor expression in hepatoma cells. It shares structural and functional similarities with LIF, IL-6, and CNTF.
