Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments found in epithelial cells, both keratinizing (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing (e.g., mesothelial cells). Although not typical markers for endothelial cells, cytokeratins can be detected in certain microvascular endothelial cells.
There are at least 20 cytokeratin types ranging from 40–70 kDa with isoelectric points between 5–8.5, identifiable via two-dimensional gel electrophoresis.
CK proteins are divided into two classes:
- Type I: Acidic polypeptides
- Type II: Basic polypeptides
All epithelial cells express at least one member of each class. Monoclonal antibodies against cytokeratin proteins serve as useful markers for tumor identification and classification.
