Target Information
Involucrin is a component of the keratinocyte crosslinked envelope, found in the cytoplasm and crosslinked to membrane proteins by transglutaminase. It is expressed in stratified squamous epithelia such as the cornea. In normal epidermis, involucrin is expressed in the upper spinous layers, and in keratinocyte cultures, it is expressed by cells that have left the basal layer. Abnormal expression is observed in squamous cell carcinomas and premalignant lesions, and reduced in severe dysplasias of the larynx and cervix. The involucrin gene is mapped to chromosome 1q21.
