Background
This gene encodes a member of the CD1 family of transmembrane glycoproteins, structurally related to MHC proteins, forming heterodimers with beta-2-microglobulin. CD1 proteins mediate the presentation of lipid and glycolipid antigens from self or microbial sources to T cells. The human genome contains five CD1 family genes clustered on chromosome 1. CD1 family members differ in cellular localization and lipid ligand specificity. The CD1E protein localizes in Golgi compartments, endosomes, and lysosomes, and is cleaved into a soluble form essential for intracellular processing of glycolipids for presentation by other CD1 family members. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been described.
