Background
The protein encoded by this gene is an interleukin-5 specific subunit of a heterodimeric cytokine receptor. The receptor consists of a ligand-specific alpha subunit and a signal-transducing beta subunit shared by the receptors for IL-3, CSF2 (GM-CSF), and IL-5. Binding of IL-5 to this alpha subunit depends on the beta subunit, which is required for IL-5 biological activity. This protein interacts with syndecan binding protein (syntenin), necessary for IL-5 mediated activation of transcription factor SOX4. Several alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been reported.
