Background
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the CXC chemokine family and acts as a major mediator of the inflammatory response. It is secreted by various cell types and functions as a chemoattractant and potent angiogenic factor. IL-8 is implicated in the pathogenesis of bronchiolitis, a common viral respiratory disease. The IL-8 gene and other CXC chemokine family members form a gene cluster mapped to chromosome 4q. (RefSeq, Jul 2008)
