Background
Neurofilaments are type IV intermediate filament heteropolymers composed of light, medium, and heavy chains. They form the axoskeleton and maintain neuronal caliber, playing a role in intracellular transport to axons and dendrites. The NF-L gene encodes the light chain neurofilament protein, and mutations in this gene are associated with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease types 1F (CMT1F) and 2E (CMT2E), which are peripheral nervous system disorders characterized by neuropathies. A pseudogene has been identified on chromosome Y.
