Background
This gene encodes a member of the stathmin family of phosphoproteins involved in microtubule dynamics and signal transduction. The encoded protein plays a regulatory role in neuronal growth and may also be involved in osteogenesis. Reduced expression has been associated with Down’s syndrome and Alzheimer’s disease. Alternatively spliced transcript variants exist, and a pseudogene is located on chromosome 6 (RefSeq, Nov 2010).
