Background
Rho-like GTPases are involved in various cellular processes and are activated by GTP binding and inactivated by GTP hydrolysis. Guanine nucleotide exchange factors (GEFs) facilitate activation by promoting GDP release. The ARHGEF3 gene encodes a GEF that specifically activates RHOA and RHOB, both associated with bone cell biology. Genetic variations in ARHGEF3 influence bone mineral density (BMD), suggesting a role in postmenopausal osteoporosis. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encode different isoforms of this gene. (RefSeq, Jul 2008)
