Target Information

SOX9 plays a crucial role in sex determination and differentiation of Sertoli cells. It is involved in chondrogenesis and regulates expression of genes acting as a transcription factor.
Translocation of this gene can cause campomelic dysplasia. It contributes to the formation of testes from fetal gonads and influences prostate epithelium development.
In prostate cancer, SOX9 supports tumor growth and invasion. It also plays a role in neural crest precursor formation and melanin production.
Expression detected in adult testis, adult heart, and fetal brain.
