Target Information

Tmem119 encodes a single-pass type I transmembrane protein that interacts with various micro-RNAs and transcription factors such as SMAD1, SMAD5, and RUNX2. TMEM119 serves as a surface marker of microglia, distinguishing them from infiltrating macrophages. Microglia are brain-resident phagocytes involved in debris clearance and neuronal dendrite pruning, exhibiting neuroprotective and neurotoxic roles depending on environmental cues.

Reactive microglia co-express Iba1 and, when stimulated with LPS, secrete Cq1, IL-1α, and TNF, potentially contributing to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s disease, and multiple sclerosis. TMEM119’s precise role in microglial function remains under investigation. Outside the neural system, TMEM119 may play a role in osteoblast differentiation and ossification.
