Target Information

The protein encoded by this gene is an enzymatic component of the tricarboxylic acid cycle (Krebs cycle) and catalyzes the formation of L-malate from fumarate. It exists in both cytosolic and N-terminal extended mitochondrial forms. The mitochondrial form is generated by removal of the extension. This enzyme functions as a homotetramer and is similar to thermostable class II fumarases. Mutations in this gene can cause fumarase deficiency, leading to progressive encephalopathy.
