Product Specific Information
The antibody was affinity-purified from rabbit antiserum by affinity chromatography using an epitope-specific immunogen. The purity is greater than 95% as determined by SDS-PAGE.
Target Information
Steroid 5alpha-Reductase is an important enzyme in androgen physiology, catalyzing the conversion of testosterone into the more potent 5alpha-dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which mediates androgen effects on target tissues.
There are two isoforms:
- Type 1: Expressed mainly in the skin
- Type 2: Expressed mainly in the prostate
In cultured human skin cells, 5alpha-Reductase 1 shows protein heterogeneity and variable transcriptional and translational expression levels.
It is expressed in all portions of the hair follicle, whereas 5alpha-Reductase 2 is expressed only in mesenchymal portions.
5alpha-Reductase 1 is also expressed in human breast carcinoma and may play a role in local androgen metabolism, including inhibition of cancer cell proliferation in hormone-dependent breast carcinoma.
The 5alpha-Reductase–3alpha-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase complex is present in the human brain, suggesting involvement in the synthesis of neuroactive steroids or catabolism of neurotoxic steroids.
For Research Use Only. Not for use in diagnostic procedures. Not for resale without express authorization.
