Target Information
The zinc transporter ZIP3 (SLC39A3) is a member of a family of divalent ion transporters. Zinc is an essential ion for cellular growth, development, and differentiation. Knockouts of ZIP1 and ZIP2 show no phenotype, and ZIP3- mice also appear normal. However, when ZIP1, ZIP2, and ZIP3 genes are all eliminated and the mice are fed a zinc-deficient diet, abnormalities such as reduced embryonic membrane-bound alkaline phosphatase activity and abnormal development occur. This indicates that ZIP1–3 proteins play a crucial, noncompensatory role under zinc-deficient conditions.
Recent studies show that ZIP2 and ZIP3 are downregulated in human prostate adenocarcinoma glands, suggesting a role in zinc retention within cells.
