Target Information
The zinc transporter ZIP2 (SLC39A2) is a member of a family of divalent ion transporters. Zinc is essential for cellular growth, development, and differentiation. ZIP2 knockout mice show no phenotypic differences compared to wild-type mice unless ZIP1, ZIP2, and ZIP3 genes are all eliminated and fed a zinc-deficient diet, which leads to developmental abnormalities. ZIP2 and ZIP3 are downregulated in human prostate adenocarcinomatous glands and may be involved in zinc retention within cells.
