Product Specific Information
This antibody reacts with an extracellular epitope of CD71 antigen (transferrin receptor), a 95 kDa type II homodimeric transmembrane glycoprotein expressed on activated B and T lymphocytes, macrophages, and erythroid precursors. It is lost on resting blood leukocytes.
The MEM-75 antibody does not block binding of transferrin to its receptor.
Target Information
Cellular uptake of iron occurs via receptor-mediated endocytosis of ligand-occupied transferrin receptor into specialized endosomes. Endosomal acidification leads to iron release, and the apotransferrin-receptor complex is recycled to the cell surface.
Transferrin receptor is essential for erythrocyte and nervous system development. Serum transferrin receptor (sTfR) serves as a diagnostic marker for various anemias and as a means of detecting erythropoietin (EPO) misuse in athletes.
