Target Information
Alpha Tubulin is a part of a heterodimer consisting of alpha and beta tubulin subunits. Both subunits (~55 kDa) are homologous but not identical. The alpha-beta tubulin heterodimer forms microtubules, essential cytoskeletal structures present in nearly all eukaryotic cells. Microtubules provide structural support, intracellular transport pathways, and play a critical role in mitosis.
Microtubules are composed of alpha and beta tubulins, while gamma tubulin is involved in microtubule nucleation. Multiple alpha and beta tubulin genes are highly conserved among species. The alpha tubulin gene is similar to the mouse and rat Tuba1 gene. Expression is predominantly found in morphologically differentiated neurologic cells.
