Target Information

Apoptosis Inducing Factor (AIF) induces chromatin condensation and DNA fragmentation. It is localized in mitochondria and translocates to the nucleus during apoptosis, promoting release of apoptogenic proteins such as cytochrome c and caspase-9. AIF is highly conserved between human and mouse and widely expressed. Mutations in the AIF gene cause combined oxidative phosphorylation deficiency 6, leading to severe mitochondrial encephalomyopathy. Multiple transcript variants and a pseudogene on chromosome 10 have been identified.
