Target Information
ABCA4 (ATP-Binding Cassette, Subfamily A, Member 4), also known as ABCR, is a protein encoded by the ABCA4 gene in humans.
It belongs to the ATP-binding cassette transporter gene sub-family A (ABC1), found exclusively in multicellular eukaryotes.
This gene maps to chromosome 1p21–p13 and is expressed exclusively in retinal photoreceptor cells, mediating transport of essential molecules across the photoreceptor cell membrane.
Immunofluorescence microscopy and Western blot analyses show ABCR presence in foveal and peripheral cone, as well as rod photoreceptors.
Loss of central vision in Stargardt macular dystrophy patients is associated with ABCR-mediated foveal cone degeneration.
