Target Information

ABCA4 (ATP-Binding Cassette, Subfamily A, Member 4), also known as ABCR, is a protein encoded by the ABCA4 gene in humans. It is a member of the ATP-binding cassette transporter sub-family A (ABC1), found exclusively in multicellular eukaryotes.
This gene is mapped to chromosomal region 1p21–p13 and is expressed exclusively in retina photoreceptor cells, mediating transport of essential molecules across the photoreceptor cell membrane.
Immunofluorescence microscopy and Western blot analyses show ABCR presence in foveal and peripheral cone, as well as rod photoreceptors.
Loss of ABCR function is associated with Stargardt macular dystrophy, leading to foveal cone degeneration and central vision loss.
