Product Specific Information

This antibody reacts with an extracellular antigen of both cell surface-expressed and soluble forms of CD44 antigen (Phagocyte glycoprotein 1), an 80–95 kDa transmembrane glycoprotein (hyaladherin family) present on most cells and tissues including leukocytes, endothelial cells, and mesenchymal cells. It is negative on platelets and hepatocytes.

Target Information

CD44 cell surface antigen is a 100 kDa type I transmembrane glycoprotein widely expressed on human leukocytes, white matter of the brain, and epithelial cells of the intestine and breast. Several isoforms exist, including the predominant CD44H isoform detected in many normal tissues.
CD44 functions as a receptor for hyaluronic acid (HA) and plays roles in cell-cell interaction, adhesion, and migration. It is involved in lymphocyte activation, recirculation, and homing. Expression may be upregulated in some carcinomas, potentially related to metastatic potential.
CD44 is expressed by hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells, epithelial tissues, and filopodia in cultured keratinocytes. Bone marrow myeloid cells and memory T cells express CD44 at high levels, and peripheral B/T cells can upregulate CD44 in response to stimulation.
Transcripts undergo complex alternative splicing, resulting in multiple isoforms with distinct functions. Diseases associated with CD44 dysfunction include superficial keratitis and lichen sclerosus, and CD44 may be related to tumor metastasis.
