Target Information

The PKC family of serine/threonine kinases, including PRKCG (PKC gamma), is activated intracellularly by signal transduction pathways. In humans, at least 12 different PKC polypeptides have been identified. These isoforms differ in structure, tissue distribution, localization, and substrate specificity.
PKC alpha, beta I, beta II, and gamma form the conventional family; their activities are Ca²⁺- and phospholipid-dependent. PKC family members phosphorylate diverse protein targets and are involved in various signaling pathways. PKC gamma is expressed mainly in the brain and spinal cord, localized to neurons, and plays roles in synaptic plasticity such as LTP and LTD. Mouse knockout studies suggest its involvement in neuropathic pain, and mutations are associated with spinocerebellar ataxia-14 (SCA14).
