Target Information

BID is a death agonist that heterodimerizes with either agonist BAX or antagonist BCL2. It is a member of the BCL-2 family of cell death regulators and mediates mitochondrial damage induced by caspase-8 (CASP8). CASP8 cleaves BID, and the C-terminal fragment translocates to mitochondria to trigger cytochrome c release, leading to apoptosis. In normal cells, BID exists in an inactive cytosolic form and becomes activated by caspase-8 in response to TNF-alpha or Fas ligand. The cleaved BID fragment (p15) translocates to mitochondria, inducing cytochrome c release and cell death. BID serves as a direct molecular link between caspase-8 activation and mitochondrial apoptosis pathways.
