Target Information

The androgen receptor (AR) is a member of the steroid-hormone receptor superfamily of nuclear receptors. It has three major functional domains: the N-terminal domain, DNA-binding domain, and androgen-binding domain.
AR is a ligand-activated transcription factor that binds testosterone (T) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Upon ligand binding, AR dissociates from accessory proteins, translocates into the nucleus, dimerizes, and activates transcription of androgen-responsive genes.
AR signaling is critical for the development and function of male reproductive organs (prostate, epididymis) and also functions in nonreproductive tissues such as muscle, hair follicles, and brain.
AR is a phosphoprotein that regulates MAP kinase signaling, and its phosphorylation state correlates with MEK1/2 pathway activity.
Abnormal AR signaling is linked to diseases including prostate cancer, Kennedy’s disease, male infertility, and complete androgen insensitivity syndrome (CAIS).
