Aldh3A1은 알데하이드 탈수소효소 초가족에 속하는 효소로, NAD(P)(+)-의존적 반응을 통해 다양한 지방족 및 방향족 알데하이드를 산화시킵니다.
이 단백질은 위와 각막에서 높은 수준으로 발현되며, 포유류 각막의 수용성 단백질 중 5~50%를 차지합니다.
Aldh3A1은 반응성 알데하이드의 해독과 UV 에너지 흡수를 통해 각막을 UV 유발 산화 스트레스로부터 보호하는 역할을 하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다.
Aldh3A1 결손 마우스의 각막은 야생형과 유사하지만, Aldh1A1과 Aldh3A1이 모두 결여된 경우 UVB 노출 후 백내장 형성이 증가하며, 이는 Aldh1A1이 Aldh3A1의 기능을 일부 보상할 수 있음을 시사합니다.
