Target Information
This gene belongs to the septin family of nucleotide-binding proteins, originally described in yeast as cell division cycle regulatory proteins. Septins are conserved across species and regulate cytoskeletal organization.
Disruption of septin function leads to cytokinesis defects, resulting in multinucleate or polyploid cells.
The SEPT5 gene is mapped to 22q11, a region often deleted in DiGeorge and velocardiofacial syndromes.
A translocation involving the MLL gene and SEPT5 has been observed in acute myeloid leukemia.
Two transcripts (2.2 kb and 3.5 kb) have been identified, with alternative polyadenylation sites and splicing variants.
