Target Information

Fatty acid binding proteins (FABPs) are small (approximately 13–14 kDa) intracellular proteins with a high degree of tissue specificity.
FABPs bind long-chain fatty acids and play an important role in intracellular fatty acid utilization.
There are at least six distinct types of FABP, each showing a specific pattern of tissue expression.
Due to their small size, FABPs leak rapidly from damaged cells, leading to elevated serum levels.

Liver FABP serves as a sensitive marker for liver cell damage both in vitro and in vivo.
Tissues with chemical damage are characterized histologically by absence or low presence of FABP, aiding in identification.
L-FABP is also used as a marker for rapid hepatocyte lysis in toxicology assays and for detecting liver damage during and after transplantation.
