Target Information
The membrane-associated protein encoded by ABCB4 is a member of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily. ABC proteins transport various molecules across extra- and intra-cellular membranes.
ABCB4 belongs to the MDR/TAP subfamily, which is involved in multidrug resistance and antigen presentation. This gene encodes a full transporter and member of the p-glycoprotein family, using phosphatidylcholine as its substrate.
It may play a role in transporting phospholipids from liver hepatocytes into bile. Alternative splicing of this gene results in several products of undetermined function.
