Target Information
Specificity of vesicular transport is regulated by interactions between vesicle-associated membrane proteins (synaptobrevin/VAMP) and target membrane proteins (syntaxin). Together with SNAP25, these form a complex serving as a binding site for membrane fusion machinery.
SNAP23, a homolog of SNAP25, is ubiquitously expressed and binds tightly to multiple syntaxins and synaptobrevins/VAMPs. It is an essential component of the high-affinity receptor for membrane fusion and regulates vesicle docking and fusion.
Two alternative transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been described for this gene.
