Target Information

Oxazepam is an intermediate-acting benzodiazepine used to treat alcohol withdrawal and anxiety disorders. It exerts its anxiolytic effects by potentiating the action of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) on GABA-A receptors. GABA receptors are ionotropic chloride-linked channels that produce inhibitory postsynaptic potentials. Activation by GABA allows chloride ion passage through the channel, leading to inhibitory effects. Benzodiazepines enhance GABA activity by increasing chloride conductance frequency, while barbiturates prolong channel opening time. There are 18 known GABA receptor subtypes; the α2 subunit (α2β3γ2 complex) is linked to anxiolytic effects, while the α1 subunit (α1β2γ2 complex) is associated with sedative and anticonvulsant effects.
