Target Information
Oxycodone is a semi-synthetic, morphine-like opioid alkaloid with analgesic activity. It exerts its analgesic effect by binding to mu-receptors in the central nervous system (CNS), mimicking endogenous opioids. This binding stimulates the exchange of GTP for GDP on the G-protein complex and inhibits adenylate cyclase, reducing cAMP production. Consequently, the release of nociceptive neurotransmitters such as substance P, GABA, dopamine, acetylcholine, and noradrenaline is inhibited. Oxycodone also inhibits the release of vasopressin, somatostatin, insulin, and glucagon, and modulates ion channels resulting in neuronal hyperpolarization and reduced excitability.
