Target Information
ALDH1A1 belongs to the aldehyde dehydrogenase family of proteins. Aldehyde dehydrogenase is the second enzyme in the major oxidative pathway of alcohol metabolism. Two major liver isoforms—cytosolic and mitochondrial—can be distinguished by electrophoretic mobility, kinetic properties, and subcellular localization. Most Caucasians have both isozymes, while approximately 50% of Orientals possess only the cytosolic isozyme, lacking the mitochondrial form. The higher frequency of acute alcohol intoxication among Orientals may be related to the absence of the mitochondrial isozyme.
