Target Information

This intronless gene is thought to have been generated by retrotransposition of a fully processed PCBP-2 mRNA.
PCBP1 and PCBP-2 have paralogues that likely arose from duplication of entire genes.
The encoded protein is multifunctional and, along with PCBP-2 and hnRNPK, forms major cellular polydomains involved in RNA binding.
Together with PCBP-2, it acts as a translational coactivator of poliovirus RNA via sequence-specific interaction with stem-loop IV of the IRES and promotes RNA replication by binding to its 5′-terminal cloverleaf structure.
It is also implicated in translational control of 15-lipoxygenase mRNA, HPV type 16 L2 mRNA, and hepatitis A virus RNA.
Additionally, it may contribute to formation of a sequence-specific alpha-globin mRNP complex associated with alpha-globin mRNA stability.
