Target Information
MiTF (Microphthalmia-associated transcription factor) is a basic helix-loop-helix-leucine zipper (b-HLH-ZIP) transcription factor involved in pigmentation, mast cell, and bone development. Mutations in MiTF cause Waardenburg Syndrome type II in humans. In mice, loss of MiTF results in depigmentation, osteopetrosis, and immune cell defects. Two isoforms exist, differing by 66 amino acids at the N-terminus. Shorter forms (52–56 kDa) are expressed in melanocytes, while longer forms (60–70 kDa) are found in osteoclasts, B16 melanoma cells, mast cells, and heart tissue.
