Target Information

Excitatory amino acid transporter 2 (EAAT2) is a member of the solute transporter protein family. It is the principal membrane-bound transporter responsible for clearing the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate from the extracellular space at synapses in the central nervous system. Proper glutamate clearance is essential for normal synaptic activation and to prevent neuronal damage caused by excessive activation of glutamate receptors. Mutations or decreased expression of this protein are associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Alternatively spliced transcript variants of this gene have been identified.
