Target Information

Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and assist in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit. They have approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA, which is present in prokaryotic ribosomes. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary significantly among species in sequence and biochemical properties, hindering recognition by sequence homology. This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, with multiple transcript variants generated by alternative splicing. Pseudogenes are found on chromosomes 6p and 12p. Read-through transcription also occurs between this gene and the upstream lipoyltransferase 1 (LIPT1) gene.
