Target Information

Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and function in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with a higher protein-to-rRNA ratio (~75%) compared to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The MRPL34 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, and its sequence varies significantly among species, making homology-based identification difficult.
