Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are essential for protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit. They contain approximately 75% protein to rRNA, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed. Prokaryotic ribosomes also contain a 5S rRNA, which is absent in mammalian mitoribosomes. Across species, the proteins of mitoribosomes vary significantly in sequence and biochemical properties, complicating recognition by sequence homology. The MRPS26 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein and is located adjacent to and downstream of the gonadotropin-releasing hormone precursor gene.
