Product Specific Information
This antibody detects endogenous levels of Androgen Receptor only when phosphorylated at Ser83.
Target Information
The androgen receptor (AR) is a member of the steroid-hormone receptor superfamily of nuclear receptors. This receptor (~90 kDa) contains three major functional domains:
- N-terminal domain
- DNA-binding domain
- Androgen-binding domain
AR acts as a ligand-activated transcription factor binding active testosterone (T) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Upon ligand binding, AR dissociates from accessory proteins, translocates into the nucleus, dimerizes, and stimulates transcription of androgen-responsive genes.
The AR signaling pathway is crucial for the development and function of male reproductive organs (prostate, epididymis) and also affects nonreproductive tissues (muscle, hair follicles, brain). AR is a phosphoprotein involved in MAP kinase regulation. Alterations in AR signaling are associated with diseases such as prostate cancer, Kennedy’s disease, and male infertility. Mutations in the AR gene can cause complete androgen insensitivity (CAIS).
