Target Information
This gene encodes a member of the E2F transcription factor family. E2F proteins regulate the cell cycle and interact with tumor suppressor proteins. They are targets of transforming proteins from small DNA tumor viruses.
E2F proteins typically contain conserved domains for DNA binding, dimerization with DP proteins, transactivation, and tumor suppressor interaction.
The E2F6 protein is atypical as it lacks transactivation and tumor suppressor association domains. It contains a modular suppression domain and functions as an inhibitor of E2F-dependent transcription.
E2F6 is part of a multimeric protein complex that includes a histone methyltransferase and transcription factors Mga and Max. Multiple transcript variants exist, though their functional isoforms are not clearly defined.
