Target Information

Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an antioxidant enzyme involved in the defense system against reactive oxygen species (ROS).
SOD catalyzes the dismutation reaction of superoxide radical anion (O₂⁻) to hydrogen peroxide, which is then converted to O₂ and H₂O by glutathione peroxidase and catalase.

Several classes of SOD have been identified:

• SOD1 (Cu,Zn-SOD): Intracellular enzyme found in all eukaryotic species; homodimeric 32 kDa enzyme containing one Cu and one Zn ion per subunit.
• SOD2 (Mn-SOD): Mitochondrial enzyme; 80 kDa tetramer located in the mitochondrial matrix near the respiratory chain.
• SOD3 (EC-SOD): Extracellular enzyme; heparin-binding multimer expressed in lungs, vessel walls, and airways.
• SOD4 (CCS): Copper chaperone for superoxide dismutase; delivers Cu to Cu/Zn-SOD and activates it through cofactor insertion.
