The antibody detects endogenous levels of total SURF-1 protein.

Target Information

The SURF-1 protein plays a crucial role in the assembly of complex IV (CIV or COX) of the mitochondrial respiratory chain. It is expressed in the inner mitochondrial membrane. Mutations in the SURF-1 gene generally cause cytochrome c oxidase complex IV deficiency, leading to Leigh syndrome—a severe neurological disorder characterized by necrotic lesions in subcortical brain regions.

SURF-1 mutations are associated with high post-implantation embryonic lethality and early-onset mortality. Deficits in muscle strength and motor performance are notable defects of SURF-1 activity, particularly in skeletal muscle and liver. Morphological abnormalities in heart, brain, and skeletal muscle frequently occur due to SURF-1 mutations.
