Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the SEP15/selenoprotein M family. Its exact function is not fully known, but it associates with UDP-glucose:glycoprotein glucosyltransferase (UGTR), an ER-resident protein involved in protein folding quality control. This association retains the protein in the ER, suggesting a role in protein folding and potentially in cancer etiology.
This protein is a selenoprotein containing the rare amino acid selenocysteine (Sec), encoded by the UGA codon. The 3′ UTRs of selenoprotein mRNAs include a conserved stem-loop structure called the SECIS element, which enables recognition of UGA as a Sec codon instead of a stop signal. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified for this gene.
