Target Information
The Apolipoprotein B mRNA-editing enzyme catalytic polypeptide-like (APOBEC) 3 family is a group of cytidine deaminases that act on monomeric nucleosides and nucleotides. APOBEC3G, a key isoform, plays a major role in cellular defense against retroviral infection by inducing hypermutation in HIV-1 viral DNA, thereby destabilizing the viral genome. This antiviral mechanism is counteracted by the HIV-1 Vif protein, which promotes APOBEC3G degradation. A single amino acid substitution (D128K) can block APOBEC3G depletion while retaining its inhibitory activity.
