Target Information

Ribosomes are organelles that catalyze protein synthesis and consist of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. These subunits contain four RNA species and approximately 80 distinct proteins. The RPS6 gene encodes a cytoplasmic ribosomal protein that is part of the 40S subunit and belongs to the S6E family. It serves as a major substrate for protein kinases in the ribosome, with phosphorylation occurring at five C-terminal serine residues. Phosphorylation is triggered by various stimuli, including growth factors and mitogens, while dephosphorylation occurs during growth arrest. This protein is implicated in the regulation of cell growth and proliferation through selective translation of specific mRNA classes. Multiple processed pseudogenes of this gene are dispersed throughout the genome.
