Target Information

Ribosomes are organelles that catalyze protein synthesis, consisting of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. These subunits contain 4 RNA species and about 80 distinct proteins. The encoded protein is a cytoplasmic ribosomal protein component of the 40S subunit and belongs to the S6E family. It serves as a major substrate for ribosomal protein kinases, with phosphorylation occurring at several C-terminal serine residues. Phosphorylation is stimulated by growth factors, tumor-promoting agents, and mitogens, while dephosphorylation occurs during growth arrest. This protein may play a role in regulating cell growth and proliferation by selectively translating specific mRNA classes. Multiple processed pseudogenes of this gene exist throughout the genome.
